  • A transformer is a device used to modify the potential difference of an alternating current.
  • Transformers are commonly seen outside power plants to convert the potential difference of electric currents.
  • An input current with an input potential difference is provided to one terminal of the transformer.
  • The transformer requires alternating current, which is constantly changing, to function.
  • The output from the second terminal is another alternating current with a different potential difference, generated using the input current's energy.
  • The input and output potential differences are not the same.
  • Transformers can either increase or decrease the input potential difference for the output.
  • A simple transformer consists of a solid iron core with two coils wound around opposing ends.
  • The two separate coils of wire carry the input and output currents and are wrapped around an iron core.
  • The iron core is used because it is easy to magnetize.
  • The primary coil carries the input alternating current.
  • The secondary coil carries the output alternating current with a different potential difference.
  • The coils are wound around the core a different number of times.
  • Familiarity with the primary and secondary coil terminology is important when studying transformers.
