Populations & Censuses
- A survey is a question or examination of a group of people or objects that provides data about that group.
- Examples of surveys include general elections, taste testing at a cookie factory, and asking for opinions on a new product.
- The population is the entire group of interest for a survey.
- A census is a survey given to the entire population.
- Censuses are usually avoided due to time, money, and logistical reasons.
- Primary data is derived from a survey with a specific purpose.
- Secondary data is derived from a general survey with no specific purpose.
- Secondary data is useful as it is cheaper and faster to look up from an existing database.
