Reverse Percentage Change
- A percentage increase or decrease can be found by multiplying the number by a certain fraction or decimal
- To find a 50% increase, multiply the number by 1.5
- To reverse the effect of a percentage increase, divide by the fraction or decimal
- You cannot undo a percentage increase by doing the corresponding percentage decrease
- Example: Cost of a meal after a 10% service charge is 22, find the original cost. Convert percentages to fractions and divide by the fraction to find the original cost.
- Example: Number of subscribers to a magazine decreases by 8%, given that there are 4,738 subscribers at the end of the year, calculate the number of subscribers at the start of the year. Convert percentages to decimals and divide by the decimal to find the original number of subscribers.
