  • Mineral ions are found in very dilute concentrations in soil.
  • Root hair cells, with a large surface area, specialize in absorbing water and nutrients from the soil.
  • Mineral ions are present in lower concentrations outside the soil than inside the root hair cell.
  • Plants absorb mineral ions from the soil through active transport, moving them up a concentration gradient, which requires energy.
  • Once inside the root hair cell, mineral ions are transported to the rest of the plant via the xylem.
