Estimating stopping distance

  • Average stopping distances for cars at varying speeds are given in the UK Highway Code:
    • A car travelling at 20 mph will have a thinking distance of around 6 m and a braking distance of around 6 m.
    • A car travelling at 70 mph will have a thinking distance of around 21 m and a braking distance of around 75 m.
  • The relationship between speed and stopping distance can be inferred from graphed data.
