Nazi dictatorship (1933–1939)

Military impacts and rearmament

  • Germany invested heavily in weapons, the army, and military industry.
  • This created jobs in factories and increased national pride.
  • Rearmament (investing in new weapons and military supplies) helped prepare Germany for war but diverted resources away from consumer goods.
  • The Nazis aimed to make Germany economically self-sufficient (autarky) to reduce reliance on imports, but this policy was expensive and inefficient
  • Allied bombing destroyed factories, homes, and transport systems. Refugees fled bombed cities, creating housing and supply problems.
  • Rationing limited access to food, clothing, and fuel. Labour shortages led to the use of forced labour from occupied countries.
