The end of the monarchy

  • Widespread strikes, protests, and mutinies in 1918 increased the pressure on the Kaiser to abdicate.
  • By November 1918, the country and its troops were in chaos and there was little the Kaiser could do. On 9 November 1918, the Kaiser abdicated and left Germany a day before the Armistice of 11 November 1918 marking Germany’s surrender and the end of WWI.
  • Germany transitioned from a monarchy to a republic, known as the Weimar Republic, amid political chaos.
  • The monarchy’s collapse reflected public anger over the war and the desire for democratic reform.
  • Friedrich Ebert, the leader of the SPD, took control temporarily as the first President of the Reich, promising to hold elections soon.
