Electric Fields
- Objects inside a field experience a non-contact force.
- Earth is within a gravitational field, pulling objects towards the center by a non-contact gravitational force.
- In a magnetic field, objects are pulled towards the poles by a non-contact magnetic force.
- Electrostatic forces are non-contact forces caused by electric fields around charged objects.
- All objects have an electric field, determining interactions with other charged particles.
- Charged objects inside the field experience an electrostatic force.
- A negative charge in the electric field of a positive charge will attract the positive charge and feel an electrostatic force.
- Electrostatic forces can be attractive or repulsive.
- The direction of the field is the direction of the force experienced by a positive charge.
- A large positive charge repels other positive charges, with the field direction pointing away.
- Fields are shown with lines and arrows indicating force direction.
- A small positive charge is attracted towards a negative charge, with field lines pointing towards the negative charge.
- Strong electric fields can cause sparks when charges are quickly forced through air or insulators.
