Representing Ionic Structure
- Ionic compounds can be represented using different models and diagrams.
- Dot and cross diagrams show electrons in circular shells using dots and crosses.
- Ball and stick models represent ions as balls connected by sticks, indicating bonds.
- 2D diagrams show one layer of alternating positive and negative ions.
- 3D diagrams stack multiple 2D layers to form a 3D structure.
- All these diagrams represent giant ionic structures made up of trillions of ions.
- Sodium chloride is an example of a giant ionic structure with a simple formula of NaCl, representing the simplest ratio.
- An empirical formula is the smallest ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.
- NaCl is an example of an empirical formula for sodium chloride.
- The empirical formula of an ionic compound can be determined using a diagram of its structure.
- Example: Manganese oxide has nine manganese ions and nine oxide ions, leading to an empirical formula of MnO.
- Steps to determine empirical formula:
- 1. Count the number of each type of ion.
- 2. Simplify the ratio of ions.
- 3. Write the empirical formula using the simplified ratio.
- Example: A compound with 3 metal X ions and 6 oxide ions simplifies to a ratio of 1:2, resulting in an empirical formula of XO���.
