Properties of Metals
- Metals consist of a lattice of positive ions and a sea of delocalized electrons.
- Positive metal ions are arranged in an irregular lattice surrounded by negatively charged delocalized electrons.
- Metals have high melting and boiling points due to strong metallic bonds.
- Aluminum has a melting point of 660��C and a boiling point of 2,470��C.
- Strong forces of attraction exist between positive metal ions and the negative sea of delocalized electrons.
- Metallic bonds are strong and require a lot of energy to overcome.
- Metals are good conductors of electricity because delocalized electrons can carry electrical charge.
- Delocalized electrons within the metallic structure are free to move, allowing electric charge to flow.
- Metals are good conductors of thermal energy.
- In a metal radiator, heat is conducted from the bottom to the top and transferred to the surroundings.
- Energy is transferred by delocalized electrons, which move throughout the structure, transferring heat energy.
