Limitations of Life Cycle Assessments
- Lifecycle assessments (LCAs) evaluate the environmental impact of a product from material sourcing to disposal.
- Quantifying each part of an LCA is challenging.
- Resource use and waste production can be measured numerically.
- Effects of pollutants are harder to quantify and may be unpredictable.
- Value judgments are needed to quantify pollutant effects, making LCAs subjective.
- LCAs can be biased if conducted by companies with vested interests.
- Selective or abbreviated LCAs may omit certain environmental impacts.
- Companies may publicize environmentally friendly aspects while omitting negative ones.
- LCAs can be misused to reach predetermined conclusions.
- Practices like these are referred to as greenwashing.
- Understanding the flaws and potential misuse of LCAs is important.
