Crude Oil
- Crude oil is a finite resource found in rocks, meaning it is limited and will eventually be depleted.
- Crude oil, often called oil, can be refined into fuels like petrol.
- It originates from ancient biomass, mainly plankton buried in mud millions of years ago.
- Plankton are microscopic plants and animals found in oceans.
- Over millions of years, pressure and heat transformed these remains into crude oil.
- Crude oil is a mixture of many compounds, primarily hydrocarbons.
- Hydrocarbons are molecules composed only of hydrogen and carbon atoms.
- Stick and ball diagrams are used to represent hydrocarbon structures, with white balls for hydrogen and black balls for carbon.
- The study of carbon compounds, including hydrocarbons, is known as organic chemistry.
- Carbon compounds are vital for organic processes and make up a significant portion of living organisms.
- Plants and animals are referred to as carbon-based life forms due to their carbon content.
- Hydrocarbons are the simplest organic molecules and will be studied in more detail.
