Concentration, Pressure & Rate
- Increasing concentration of reactants in solution or pressure of reacting gases increases the rate of reaction.
- Reaction rate measures how quickly reactants are used up or products are made.
- Graphs can track reaction rates, with time on the x-axis and product amount on the y-axis.
- Higher concentration or pressure results in a steeper graph, indicating a higher rate of reaction.
- Lower concentration or pressure results in a shallower curve, indicating a lower rate of reaction.
- Increasing concentration or pressure results in more reactant particles in a given area.
- More reactant particles increase the frequency of collisions.
- Collision theory states particles must collide to react.
- More particles in the same volume increase the likelihood of collisions.
- Increased collisions lead to more frequent successful reactions.
- Higher concentration or pressure results in more successful collisions overall, increasing the reaction rate.
