Proteins & Proteases
- Proteins are large molecules composed of amino acids.
- High-protein foods include meat, fish, and eggs.
- Proteins are digested by proteases, which are digestive enzymes that break proteins into amino acids.
- The digestion process can be represented by a simple word equation: Protein + Protease = Amino Acids.
- Proteases are produced in the stomach, pancreas, and small intestine.
- The pancreas also produces other digestive enzymes, which are passed into the small intestine.
- Amino acids produced from protein digestion are used to build new proteins, enzymes, and muscle in the body.
