Passive voice

  • Form: conjugate être in the required tense + past participle of the verb (optionally + par or de for the agent doing the verb). The past participle agrees in gender/number with the subject.
  • Use: focuses on the object; common in formal/written French.
  • Examples:
    • Past: Le livre a été lu par Marie. (The book is read by Marie.)
    • Present: Elle est respectée de tous. (She is respected by everyone.)
    • Future: Le travail sera fait demain. (The work will be done tomorrow.)
