Grammar II: Verbs

Present continuous tense

  • The present continuous describes what is happening right now (e.g.‘I am eating,’ ‘she is talking’).
  • Structure: estar (in present tense) + gerund.
  • To form regular gerunds:
    • -ar verbs -ando
      • e.g. hablar hablando (speaking)
    • -er / -ir verbs -iendo
      • e.g. comer comiendo (eating)
  • Examples: Using hablar (to speak, regular -ar):
    • Yo estoy hablando. I am speaking.
    • estás hablando. You are speaking.
    • Él / Ella está hablando. He/She is speaking.
    • Nosotros estamos hablando. We are speaking.
    • Vosotros estáis hablando. You all are speaking.
    • Ellos están hablando. They are speaking.
  • Using comer (to eat, regular -er):
    • Estoy comiendo. I am eating.
  • Using vivir (to live, regular -ir):
    • Estamos viviendo en Madrid. We are living in Madrid.
