Imperfect tense

  • The imperfect tense in Spanish describes one of two scenarios:
    • Habitual past actions (what someone used to do)
    • Ongoing or background actions in the past (was/were + -ing in English – e.g ‘you were speaking’)

    • Yo hablaba con ella cuando él entró. (I was talking to her when he walked in.) [ongoing action]
    • Tú hablabas mucho cuando eras niño. (You used to talk a lot when you were a child.) [habitual]
    • Ella comía cuando sonó el teléfono. (She was eating when the phone rang.) [ongoing]
    • Nosotros comíamos pizza todos los viernes. (We used to eat pizza every Friday.) [habitual]
    • Yo vivía en Madrid en ese momento. (I was living in Madrid at that time.) [ongoing]
    • Ellos vivían cerca del mar cuando eran niños. (They used to live near the sea when they were kids.) [habitual]
