Gas particles

  • The particles in a gas move with random motion.
    • They travel in random directions with random speeds.
    • As the temperature of the gas increases, the particles gain more kinetic energy and their speeds increase.
  • Gas particles will collide with each other and the walls of the container they are in.
    • No kinetic energy is lost during these collisions.
    • The collisions with the walls exert a force on them at right angles to them. This means the gas is exerting a pressure on the container.
    • Increasing the temperature of the gas without changing its volume increases this pressure, as the particles hit the walls with more force.
