Energy stores and systems

  • A system is an object or a group of objects, such as a kettle filled with water.
  • Energy is stored in a system and can take numerous forms. Changes that occur in a system will change how the energy is stored in it. 
Types of energy store
Energy Description
Kinetic The energy that causes an object to move.
Thermal The energy that causes objects to become hotter.
Electric The energy transferred by an electric current.
Chemical The energy stored in batteries and fuels.
Nuclear The energy stored in nuclei to hold atoms together.
Gravitational potential The energy an object gains as it travels upward away from the Earth.
Elastic potential The energy an object gains as it is stretched or compressed.
Magnetic potential The energy an object gains due to the magnetic attraction or repulsion it is experiencing.
