The Navy Laws

  • The Navy Laws, introduced from 1898 onwards, aimed to build a powerful German navy as a symbol of German strength and global ambition.
  • They were popular with nationalists and helped increase public support for the Kaiser.
  • The laws also helped distract the public from domestic problems such as inequality and political unrest.
  • However, naval expansion was expensive and contributed to tensions with Britain, increasing international pressure on Germany
