Problems with White Settlement farming

In 1854, the government opened Nebraska and Kansas for settlement, predicting economic growth. However, farming on the Great Plains was much harder than in California or Oregon.
The land was dry, with extreme weather and few trees for building or fuel. Early settlers struggled to grow crops and build homes, facing isolation and hardship.
By the 1850s, California and Oregon were successful due to better farming conditions; this allowed them to export wheat to other parts of the world.
