The 1860 election

  • Abraham Lincoln was the Republican candidate in the presidential election of 1860. He opposed the expansion of slavery but did not call for its immediate abolition where it already existed.
  • He won the election without carrying a single Southern state.
  • Southern leaders interpreted his election as proof that their interests could no longer be protected within the Union.
  • Lincoln’s victory directly triggered secession.
