Abraham Lincoln was the Republican candidate in the presidential election of 1860. He opposed the expansion of slavery but did not call for its immediate abolition where it already existed.
He won the election without carrying a single Southern state.
Southern leaders interpreted his election as proof that their interests could no longer be protected within the Union.
Lincoln’s victory directly triggered secession.
