Trench warfare

  • Frontline trench: where attacks were launched and most fighting occurred.
  • Support trench: located about 80 meters behind the frontline; used for retreat and support.
  • Reserve trench: about 100 meters behind the support trench; troops stationed here for counterattacks.
  • Dugouts: holes in the side of trenches for soldiers to take cover.
  • Zig-zag design: trenches were built in zigzags to limit the impact of explosions and shrapnel. • Artillery emplacements: used to launch explosives over long distances.
