Tectonic plate margins

Conservative margins

  • Conservative margins or transform boundaries occur when two tectonic plates slide past each other in different directions, or the same direction at different speeds.
    • These cause earthquakes but not volcanoes (e.g. the Pacific and North American plates, creating the San Andreas Fault in California).
    • Pressure builds up over many years until the plates slip past each other, triggering destructive, devastating earthquakes.
