COMPUTER SYSTEMS: Computer systems

Types of computer system

  • General purpose systems: computer systems that can perform a wide range of tasks (e.g. PCs, Macs, tablets, smartphones).
  • Dedicated systems: computer systems that are designed to perform a specific function (e.g. printers, WiFi routers).
  • Embedded systems: computer systems built into another device to support its function (e.g. computer systems in washing machines and dishwashers).
    • Embedded systems are primarily intended to monitor and control the various components in the host device (e.g. a dishwasher requires this computer to keep track of water temperature and pressure, washing programs, and timings).
    • These systems are beneficial because their limited range of tasks make them cheap to produce, energy efficient, and very reliable. However, they are only designed to perform specific tasks and are hard to update once manufactured.
