Types of economic sectors

Businesses operate in three sectors of the economy, each producing different types of goods/services.

Sector	Description	Examples
Primary	Extracts natural resources	Farming, fishing, mining
Secondary	Manufactures goods from raw materials	Car production, construction
Tertiary	Provides services	Retail, education, healthcare

Businesses can also be in either the private or public sector.

Sector	Description	Examples
Private	Owned by individuals or companies to make profit	Tesco, BP, ASOS
Public	Owned and run by governments to provide essential services	NHS, police, public schools
