Plant stem cells

  • In plant meristem tissue, stem cells can differentiate into any type of plant cell throughout the life of the plant.
  • Plant stem cells are used to artificially produce clones of plants as this process is quick and economically efficient.
  • Rare species can be cloned to prevent extinction, and crops with features such as disease resistance are cloned to make large numbers of identical plants for farmers.
