Species and classification

Classification and Linnaeus

  • Traditionally, living things have been classified into groups depending on their structure and characteristics.
  • This system was developed by Carl Linnaeus.
    • Linnaeus classified living things into kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species.
    • Organisms are named by the two-part binomial system of genus plus species.
    • Scientists write binomial names in italics with a capital letter for the genus, e.g. for the organism Homo sapiens, Homo is the genus and sapiens is the species.
