Root hair cells are adapted for the efficient uptake of water by osmosis and mineral ions by active transport:
- Thin: short distance for osmosis and active transport
- Long: penetrate between soil particles to come into contact with water and mineral ions
- Large surface area: maximise osmosis and active transport
- Lots of mitochondria for active transport
