Hormone regulation and waste excretion

The endocrine system

  • The endocrine system is composed of glands, which secrete hormones into the bloodstream.
  • The blood carries hormones to target organs where they produce an effect. These effects are slower but longer lasting than in the nervous system.
  • The pituitary gland is a ‘master gland’ found in the brain. It secretes several hormones into the blood in response to body conditions. The hormones it secretes act on other glands to stimulate other hormones to be released.
