Genetic engineering and modification

Genetically modified (GM) organisms

  • GM crops can be genetically engineered to improve resistance to diseases and insect attacks, improve resistance to environmental conditions (e.g. drought), produce bigger and better fruit and vegetables, or make crops resistant to the herbicides used on weeds.
  • Concerns of GM crops include fears that the genes might spread into the wild gene pool (e.g. herbicide-resistant weeds) and caution about the effects of eating GM crops on human health.
