Large-scale deforestation in tropical areas has occurred to:
- Provide land for cattle and rice fields.
- Grow crops for biofuels.
Environmental implications of deforestation:
- Increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as there are fewer trees to take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.
- Burning of trees increases atmospheric carbon dioxide.
- Reduces biodiversity as it destroys species of tree and removes habitat for several species of animals.
- Causes drier climates as there is less transpiration by trees, resulting in drier soils, fewer roots, and greater risk of erosion and landslides.
