Scene-by-Scene Analysis

Act 1 Scene 2

There is a conversation between old Capulet and Paris, who wishes to marry Capulet’s fourteen-year-old daughter. Capulet, shockingly to a modern-day audience, does not discourage this union but merely says that she is his only living daughter and that she is still very young, so there is a bit of wariness and hesitation in marrying her off. In order to protect his daughter and more so his family, Capulet suggests that Paris wait two years before he weds his daughter, and then, only if his daughter is willing, he will give his full support and consent for the union.
