Interactionism

Interactionism: focuses on micro-level interactions and the social construction of meaning.
- 👤 Becker (1963): deviance is created through moral labelling. Labels can lead to self-fulfilling prophecies (e.g. ‘model student’ vs. ‘problem student’).
- 👤 Goffman (1956): social life as a performance, with impression management shaping how others see us.
- 👤 Cicourel (1968): justice is negotiated. Police use typifications of the ‘typical offender’ that reflect class/ethnic biases.
- 👥 Rosenthal and Jacobsen (1968): Pygmalion effect/halo effect: teachers can form biases from first impressions.
